A cruelty-free vegan lifestyle is not yet well-supported by most restaurants, and while it may be possible to special-order and question your way to a decent vegan dish I've found it necessary to develop my cooking skills a bit more. Here are some items that should always be in your kitchen as a vegan cook, some are simple to find, others are not as easy to find.
Produce
- Scallions
- Tomatoes
- Broccoli
- Garlic
- Onions (I like red onions)
- Romaine lettuce
Meat Replacers
- Soft silken tofu
- Extra firm tofu
- Tempeh
- Seitan
- Smart Deli Vegan Bacon Slices
Condiments
- Earth Balance vegan margarine spread
- Peanut Butter
- Mustard
- Ketchup
- Vegan-friendly barbecue sauce
Cheese Replacers
- Tofutti Better than Cream Cheese
- Tofutti Better than Sour Cream
- Tofutti or other brand soy cheese slices
Grains
- Bread (watch the ingredients, many commercially available breads use whey as a dough conditioner)
- Rice (white and brown preferably)
- All-Purpose Flour

- Olive Oil
