A cruelty-free vegan lifestyle is not yet well-supported by most restaurants, and while it may be possible to special-order and question your way to a decent vegan dish I've found it necessary to develop my cooking skills a bit more. Here are some items that should always be in your kitchen as a vegan cook, some are simple to find, others are not as easy to find.

Produce

  • Scallions
  • Tomatoes
  • Broccoli
  • Garlic
  • Onions (I like red onions)
  • Romaine lettuce

Meat Replacers

  • Soft silken tofu
  • Extra firm tofu
  • Tempeh
  • Seitan
  • Smart Deli Vegan Bacon Slices

Condiments

  • Earth Balance vegan margarine spread
  • Peanut Butter
  • Mustard
  • Ketchup
  • Vegan-friendly barbecue sauce

Cheese Replacers

  • Tofutti Better than Cream Cheese
  • Tofutti Better than Sour Cream
  • Tofutti or other brand soy cheese slices

Grains

  • Bread (watch the ingredients, many commercially available breads use whey as a dough conditioner)
  • Rice (white and brown preferably)
  • All-Purpose Flour

Oils

  • Olive Oil
  • Peanut Oil
  • Sunflower or Vegetable Oil
